What is a home-based business?

There are three categories of home-based business under Mandurah's Local Planning Scheme. Which category applies to you depends on the scale of your operations.

Home office — work done entirely within your home where:

  • No clients or customers visit
  • No signage is displayed
  • There is no change to the external appearance of your home

Examples include consulting, bookkeeping or remote work.

Home occupation — a small business run from your home or property where:

  • No non-household employees work on site
  • No more than 20m² of space is used
  • Client visits are limited and do not increase traffic in the neighbourhood

Examples include a hairdresser, beauty therapist or music teacher seeing clients by appointment.

Home business — a slightly larger operation where:

  • Up to 2 non-household employees work on site
  • No more than 50m² of space is used
  • The business does not create traffic or parking problems for the neighbourhood

If you are unsure which category applies to you, contact a planning officer.
