Bin collections

If you are unable to move your bins to the kerb due to disability or illness, our drivers can collect them from your property and return them for you. 

To apply for this service, residents must submit a written request to the City, accompanied by a letter of support from a general practitioner or medical doctor. 

Once the service is approved, a representative from Cleanaway will contact you to confirm the agreed bin collection location.

Residents with low vision can request tactile bin lids that feature hot-stamped shapes (squares for general waste and triangles for recycling) to help identify their bins.

Residents with access needs can request a star sticker that will signal to truck drivers that a bin should be returned to the same location after collection.

Bins are collected on all public holidays except Christmas Day. 

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on a Friday - if this is your usual collection day, it will be delayed by one day.

Changes to the bin collection schedule

• Usual collection day - Friday 25th December
• Reschedules to - Saturday 26th December

All services will resume as normal on your usual collection day from Monday, 28 December 2026.

Why wasn't my bin collected? 

Drivers may refuse to empty bins if they cannot be lifted safely or accessed by the truck arm. 

• Was it out on time? Bins must be on the kerb by 6am on your collection day. 
• Was it too heavy? Bins must not weigh more than 70kg. 
• Was it too close to obstacles? There must be at least 1 metre clearance from trees, fences, cars, and letterboxes. 
• Was it too close to the other bin? Keep a 0.5 metre gap between your recycling and general waste bins. 
• Was it facing the wrong way? Wheels must face the house. 
• Was the lid open? Lids must be fully closed to prevent spillage.  

If your bin was placed correctly and we missed it, let us know immediately so we can arrange a return pickup.

This incurs the standard rubbish service charge and will also be billed through an Interim Rates Notice.

Residents can request changes to their bin services, including additional bins, upgrades, or downgrades. 

General waste 

Residents are provided with a standard 240L general waste bin. If you wish to change your general waste service, the following options are available: 

• Additional 240L general waste bin: $164.25 ongoing annual charge 
• Downgrade from a 240L to a 140L general waste bin: $62 one‑off fee, plus an ongoing $10 reduction in annual rates 

Recycling bins

Residents are provided with a standard 240L recycling bin. If you wish to change your recycling service, the following options are available: 

• Additional 240L recycling bin: $157.75 ongoing annual charge 
• Upgrade from a 240L to a 360L recycling bin: $109 one‑off fee

Requests must be made by the ratepayer or managing agent. All charges are applied via an Interim Rates Notice. 

Please note: Only bins displaying a City‑issued sticker will be serviced. Bins without an authorised sticker will not be collected.

There is no charge for bin repairs or replacements.

Bins are strategically located in public spaces where waste is generated and where infrastructure is needed to manage waste effectively. 

Note: It is an offence to place household waste in council bins located in parks or reserves. Offenders may be subject to a $400 fine. If you witness or can provide evidence of a waste dumping incident, please contact the City at [email protected] or call (08) 9550 3777.
